For sourcing teams, water management is not only an environmental line item. It can affect process stability, chemical control, shade consistency, documentation and the credibility of a finished garment’s sustainability claims. Dyeing and finishing generate complex wastewater streams, so an apparel programme cannot be assessed through a recycling percentage alone. Brands need to understand where water is used, how it is treated, what is recovered and how the system is monitored when production moves from sampling to repeat bulk orders.

Water recycling and ZLD solve related but different problems
Water recycling treats suitable wastewater so it can return to selected factory operations. The recovered water may be reused in processes where its quality is appropriate, reducing demand for fresh water. Zero-liquid-discharge (ZLD) goes further: it is designed to prevent treated industrial wastewater from leaving the facility as a liquid discharge. Concentrated residues remain and require controlled handling, recovery or disposal.

The distinction matters. A facility can recycle water without ZLD, while a ZLD system may still underperform when treatment is unstable or recovered water is unsuitable for its next use. A sustainable textile manufacturer needs operating controls connecting wastewater intake, treatment performance, reuse quality and residual-waste management, not merely equipment on a flow diagram.

The treatment loop must match the wet process
Textile effluent varies with fibre, dyes, auxiliaries, salts and finishing chemistry. Segregating streams can improve treatment efficiency because relatively clean water may not need the route used for heavily contaminated effluent. Systems can combine equalisation, biological or chemical treatment, filtration, membranes and evaporation; the sequence must match the factory’s wastewater profile.

Recycled water is also a production input. Fluctuating hardness, dissolved solids or pH can affect dye uptake, rinsing and shade repeatability. Its quality specification should therefore match the receiving operation, avoiding a false trade-off between water recovery and garment quality.

ZLD reduces liquid discharge but concentrates salts, sludge and other residues requiring responsible management. Evaporation and membrane systems need energy, maintenance and skilled operation. Focusing only on “zero discharge” can obscure membrane reject handling, evaporator performance, sludge records, downtime procedures and the destination of recovered salts.

Chemical input control matters because treatment becomes harder when problematic substances enter the process. Chemical inventories, formulation screening and wastewater testing should therefore be reviewed alongside water-recovery infrastructure.   • A current process-flow diagram showing wastewater sources, treatment stages, reuse points and any discharge route.
  • Water-quality parameters for both treated water and recovered water, with the test method, frequency and responsible team.
  • Records for freshwater intake, treated volume, reused volume, system downtime and abnormal operating conditions.
  • Sludge, salt and membrane-reject handling, including storage and authorised disposal or recovery documentation.
  • Chemical-management controls that connect purchased formulations with wastewater and sludge monitoring.
  • The scope and date of any audit, certificate or laboratory report, rather than relying on a logo or an undated summary.
These checks help product-development and quality teams understand whether water management will remain stable as styles, colours and order volumes change. They also give sustainability teams evidence they can qualify carefully instead of converting a factory-level statement into an unsupported product claim.
